Richard "Dick" Madson

March 30, 1946 — March 9, 2025

Albert Lea

Richard “Dick” Madson, 78, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, at the Lake Mills Care Center on Sunday, March 9, 2025. A Celebration of Life will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025, at the Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home in Albert Lea, MN.

Dick was born on March 30, 1946, in Albert Lea to Hubert and Anna Madson. He grew up in rural Glenville and graduated from Glenville High School in 1965. After graduation, he dedicated his life to farming - his true passion. It was a passion that lasted until his final days… “Once a farmer, always a farmer.” His dedication earned him the honors of “Outstanding Young Farmer” in 1980 and “Farm Family of the Year” in 1991.

Known for his generosity and unwavering work ethic, Dick was always eager to help others; sometimes to the detriment of his own needs. His willingness to help others was evident by his recognition as the “District 241 Citizen of the Year.”

In spite of his hardworking nature, Dick knew how to enjoy life. He was never one to pass up sharing a good joke or a memorable story. On most occasions he was the life of the party, frequently accepting the challenge of a dare for the enjoyment of others, much to the chagrin of his wife, Faye.

To many he was known as “Daddy Dick,” the one who refilled your tank of gas or bought another round; even when not asked. To his grandkids and their friends (his extended grandkids), he was known as “Grandpa Dick,” giving them an extra twenty for their Friday night plans or a stern talking to about being “safe” before hitting the road.

Dick was a devoted family man. He had high expectations for his kids and took the time to teach them everything he knew, particularly to never let someone ‘out work’ you. His expectations and lessons did not fall flat and he repeatedly reminded all those who would listen how lucky and proud he was of his family.

Above all, he cared that his children and grandchildren were kind and generous and never missed the opportunity to set that example. Always one to wear his heart on his sleeve, you never had to guess how he felt and he wouldn’t hesitate to share how much you were loved.

Left to honor his memory are his wife, Faye; daughters Joan (Mark) Krull and Robyn Lodin; sons Darin (Katie) and Bryan (Katie); and grandchildren Jordan, Cody (Liz), Garrett, Ellie, Madison, Jack, Carson, Quinn, Nora, Rafe, Gus, Turner, and Tucker.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Lake Mills Care Center and the St. Croix Hospice team for their compassionate care and support.
