Manly Bakken

June 14, 1921 — April 5, 2013

Funeral services for Manly Bakken age 91 of Albert Lea, formerly of rural Alden will be held on Wednesday April 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Alden.  Burial will be at Carlston Cemetery.  Military honors will be accorded by local servicemen’s organizations, VFW and American Legion.  Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:30 – 7:00 p.m at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church.  
Manly died Friday, April 5, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Home.
Manly Bakken was born on June 14, 1921 in Freeborn County the son of Oswald and Christine (Christiansen) Bakken.  He attended country school.  In 1942 Manly was drafted into the United States Army.  He served in the 17th regiment combat team, 50th engineer combat battalion.  He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, the Marshall Islands and in the Philippines.  Manly was united in marriage to Ethel Pedersen on Sept. 19, 1942 in Albert Lea.  After his return in 1945,  Manly and Ethel moved to the farm they lived and farmed on for many years.  Manly also worked for Patz Barn Cleaner and Silage loader doing sales and installation and did road maintenance for Carlston Township.   He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, the American Legion, V.F.W. and was a past member of Freeborn County Rod and Gun Club.  
Survivors include his daughters, Rebecca (Larry) Bluhm, Rosanne (Allan) Brandau and Peggy Bakken (Bruce Treichler), and son Mark (Linda) Bakken.  Grandchildren; Michael (Wendy) Bluhm, Kevin (Ann) Bluhm, Kristine (Joel) Hagglund, Jeffrey (Michelle) Bluhm, Julie (Jeff) Timmerman, Diane Bluhm,  Donna (Douglas) Caywood, Richard (CeCe) Bluhm, Greg (Amy) Bluhm, Sheila (Peter) Hearn, Paul Treichler and Matthew Treichler.  23 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.  Sister; Lillian Perkins and sisters-in-law; Lorraine Bakken and Eleanor Pedersen.  Many nieces and nephews
Manly was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ethel, daughter and son-in-law Kathryn and John Bluhm, and siblings; Herschel and Grant Bakken and Helen Ayers.
