Funeral services for Ila Schmidt, age 95, of Alden will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden. Rev. Greg Ofsdahl will officiate. Interment will be at the Silver Lake Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by local servicemenâs organizations, VFW and American Legion. Visitation will be from 4:00 â 6:00 p.m. Friday, February 13, 2015 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Ila died Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Albert lea.
Ila J. Schmidt was born on Dec. 6, 1919 in Worth County, Iowa the daughter of Iver and Jennie (Johnson) Iverson. She attended and graduated from Northwood High School and then St. Olaf College and Nurses Training at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. Ila entered the US Army Nurses Corp shortly after where she was stationed in Salina, KS., Australia and the Philippine Islands After her discharge Ila moved back to Freeborn County and started her career at Naeve Hospital as the Nurses night supervisor. On Nov. 3, 1973 Ila was united in marriage to Dr. Ruben Schmidt at the Silver Lake Lutheran Church. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery, counted cross stitch, making quilts, photography, gardening and her study club. Ilaâs friends and her step-grandchildren gave her much happiness. She was a member of the Womenâs Veterans of MN., Freeborn County Women In Service, a life member of the Red Cross, the retired Nurses and Naeve Hospital Auxiliary, the National WWII Memorial and the American Legion. She was a member of Silver Lake Lutheran Church and Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Ila is survived by her step-children: Rebecca (Glenn) Taibl, Rachel Bhattacharyya and David Kim (Margaret) Schmidt. Step-grandchildren; Erika Lynn Taibl (Andrew Wilkowske), Rita Bhattacharyya, Nina Bhattacharyya, Isaac Schmidt, Aaron Schmidt and Jay Bhattacharyya; step-great-grandchildren Annika Maj and Jackson Christopher Wilkowske. Nephews; Stuart (Alice), Keith (Janet), Iver, James (Jorene), Peter and Jim Iverson, Nieces; Dorothy (Hamlin) Burtness, Sharon Bornfleth, Jane Howland, Lucy (Jack) Howland, Gennell Iverson, Margaret Iverson and Janell Iverson. Many great-nieces and Nephews.
Ila was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dr. Ruben Schmidt, brothers; E. Sophus (Tena) Iverson, Simon (Gertrude) Iverson, Jay (Agnes) Iverson and Kermit (Helen) Iverson. Niece, Sylvia Iverson and nephews Paul, Loren, Mark and Jon Iverson.
