Herbie John Waalkens was born on June 10, 1942, to Pete and Rene Loverink Waalkens in Hollandale, MN. He attended the Hollandale schools until 8th grade then he went to Albert Lea school where he graduated in 1960. Herbie married Barbara Jean Peterson on January 6, 1961 at the East Freeborn Lutheran Church. He started working at Wilson & Co. in 1962 in various departments until being promoted to foreman in the mid 80's. Herbie also attended many classes on supervision and plant mechanics. In July of 2001 when Farmstead was destroyed by fire, he then attended classes and received his CDL license. Herbie went on to work for R&R construction and District 241 as a school bus driver. He worked for Pro Manufacturing from November of 2002 - 2006; then with Pro Trucking from October 2006 to the present time. Herbie was an avid fisherman, hunter, and golfer. He also enjoyed camping and card club. Herbie loved spending time with his family and friends. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons, Andrew Jodie Waalkens, Michael Linda Waalkens, and Jay Sue Waalkens; grandchildren, Timothy, Alisha, Benjamin, Taran, Heather, and Jonathan Waalkens; brother, Peter Karen Waalkens, sister, Rena Marlene Michael Waalkens-Masyga, many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Herbie was preceded in death by his parents Pete and Rene Waalkens and his dog Molley. In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials.
