Hazel Arnetta McGill was born on January 27, 1915 to Ivo and Eliza Tapp Mattingly in Brookings, SD. She graduated from Alden High School. Hazel married Bill McGill on November 14, 1934 in Glenwood, IA. Hazel was a devoted wife and mother and spent her time as a homemaker. She loved sewing and quilting. Hazel was well known for her wonderful hat collection that she loved to share by attending many churches and groups telling stories, modeling her hats, and sharing the history behind them. She had collected several hundred hats through the years from all over the Freeborn County. Hazel worked at the Alden Advance, Wallace's in Albert Lea, volunteered at St. John's for 15 years and worked at the Good Samaritan Center. She was a member of the East Freeborn Church where she served as the custodian and was also active in the alter guild and circle #3. Hazel also enjoyed crocheting scarves, mittens, and caps. Survivors include her daughter, Kay and husband Ralph Henderson of Shawnee Mission, KS, twin grandsons, Charles Henderson of Los Angeles, CA and David Henderson of Roland Park, KS; sisters-in-law, Jean Mattingly of Albert Lea, Tootie Mattingly of Council BLuffs, IA, Clara McGill of Albert Lea, Jennie McGill of Wells, and Lula Strecker of Longview, WA; brother-in-law, Lawrence and wife Ethel McGill of Albert Lea; nieces, nephews and cousins. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; sister, Hilda Green; brothers, Dick, Orville, and DeVern Mattingly.
