Gertie Louise Hyland was born on August 17, 1916 in Beaumont, Texas, the daughter of Louis and Jeanette Griffin Gulbrandson. She moved with her family as a young child to Albert Lea and grew up here, graduating from Albert Lea High School in 1934. On August 1, 1940, Gertie was united in marriage to Leslie A. Hoium. Gertie worked as an elevator operator at the Medical Arts Building, was a sales clerk at Wallace's Department Store, and worked in the Housekeeping Department at St. John's Lutheran Home. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, where she was active in a mission circle, taught Sunday School and was the Sunday School Secretary. She was a member of the DOES club. Gertie was a talented pianist and gave many recitals, in addition to teaching piano to many students through the years. Following the death of her husband Leslie in 1975, Gertie was married in 1980 to Edward Hyland at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Survivors include her children Jeanine and husband Dave Christensen of Clarks Grove, Janice and her husband Dave Springborg, of Albert Lea, Larry Hoium of Albert Lea, and James and his wife Joyce Hoium of Albert Lea; step-children Linda and husband Larry Rodenz of Mabel, MN, Bobbi and husband Neal Berg, of Alden, and Mike and wife Pat Hyland of California; 11 grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren; and brother Howard and his wife, Jeanette Gulbrandson, of Albert Lea. Gertie was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Les and Ed, a daughter Jodi Rae in infancy, and her sister, Alice Gullette.
