Gerald D. Simon was born April 20, 1928, to Erbin D. and Anna Skogen Simon in Lake Mills, IA., where he attended school. He began working at Wilson & Co. in 1944. Sonny served in the United States Navy from 1945 - 1947. After his discharge, he returned to Wilson & Co. later Farmstead Foods where he was employed for 43 years, retiring in 1987. On January 7, 1949, Sonny was united in marriage to Rosella Roberts in Albert Lea. He had a big heart and was a very compassionate man that enjoyed giving to others. Sonny loved the Lord with a deep faith and felt he was a very rich man because of his many blessings. Sonny dearly loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was always interested in their daily lives and activities. He also enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions and doing yard work. Sonny attended Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the VFW. Survivors include his wife, Rosella of Albert Lea; daughters: Janet and her husband, John Goodmanson of Clinton, WI, Barbara and her husband, Kevin Carlson of Leaburg, OR, Nancy and her husband, Kelly Flattum of Waseca, and Kathi and her husband, Ken Peterson of Huron, SD; grandchildren: Trenie and her husband, Keith Gorak, Dean and his wife, Tamara Goodmanson, Ken Jr., Jackson, & Joshua Peterson, Melaina, Brooke, & Jordan Flattum, Casey, Jesse, & Timminy Carlson; great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Evan, Isaac, Jude, Luke, and one expected in May; sister, Elaine Dot and her husband, Marvin Anderson of Lake Mills; brothers and sisters-in-law: Donald Roberts of Hackensack, Milton Roberts, Laverne and his wife, Carol Roberts, and Mary and her husband, Don Blake, all of Albert Lea, and Mavis Roberts of Ellendale; and many nieces and nephews. Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Savannah Renae Carlson; sister, Lila and her husband, Owen Edwin; mother and father-in-law, Florence and Axel Roberts; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Richard Roberts, Harriet and Ernest Christensen, and Karen Roberts, and niece Ashley Krell. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Calvary Baptist Church, YFC/The Rock or the donors choice.
