Gaylen August Mittag

November 26, 1919 — June 1, 2007

Gaylen August Mittag was born November 26, 1919, to Walter and Olga Lau Mittag in Freeborn County. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church and attended country school near Myrtle. On November 28, 1940, Gaylen was united in marriage to Pearl Anna Virchow at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Gaylen and Pearl were life long farmers in the Myrtle area. Gaylen was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He had served on the school board, creamery board, Shellrock Township Board of Supervisors, the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Council and the Wanderer's Rest Cemetery Board. Survivors include his wife, Pearl of Albert Lea; children: Gerald Judy Mittag of Wabasha, Darlene Laverne Hauge of Glenville, Marilyn Dwayne Anderson of Mankato, and Raymond Lydia Mittag of Glenville; 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 13 step great-grandchildren; sister, Luetta Wolff of Chandler, AZ; brother, Wilbur Evelyn Mittag of Austin; and step brother, Arnold Broitzman of the Good Samaritan Center. Gaylen was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Olga; step father, Robert Broitzman; brother, Luverne Mittag; sons-in-law, Paul A. Schmidt and Larry Williamson; and brothers-in-law, Edward Wolff, Arley Virchow, Russell Virchow, and Glen Virchow. Gaylen truly enjoyed his family, church, and farming. He will be sadly missed by all.
