Funeral services for Daryl W. Smith, age 92, of Albert Lea, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2016 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. Rev. Nancy Overgaard will officiate. Interment will be at Alden Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. Daryl died Monday, July 11, 2016 at his home at Thorne Crest.
Daryl W. Smith was born April 21, 1924 in rural Wells, the son of Charles and Estelle Marie (Armstrong) Smith. He grew up in rural Alden and graduated from Alden School. On October 24, 1946 he married Juanice Schacko at St. Johnâs Lutheran Church in Walters. Daryl farmed for many years. He was a member of the Alden United Methodist Church and served on the Alden School Board and the Board of Directors of the Coop Elevator in Alden. Daryl enjoyed sports, especially baseball. He kept stats of the Alden-Conger football teams, was the score keeper for the Alden-Conger baseball teams, and also managed the Alden Gems baseball team. Daryl and Juanice wintered in Texas for 14 years. He loved giving his grandkids candy from the back seat of his pickup, giving his great-grandkids quarters, and giving golf cart rides.
Daryl is survived by his wife, Juanice âDottyâ Smith; son, Greg Smith; special friend, Marsha Rafdal; daughter, Julie (John) Dale; grandchildren, Holly (Justin) Janni, Kyle (Loretta) Smith, Tricia (Jeremy) Linn, Tracie (Shane) Hofmann, and Sarah (Jon) Bakken; great-grandchildren, Bennett and Evan Janni, Camden Smith, Megan, Jaden, and Darin Linn, Tenley and Kaden Hofmann, and Brenna, Caylee, and Gannon Bakken; siblings, Dona Sens, Maxine Rogness, Bruce Smith, Eileen Leland, and Charlotte Peterson.
Daryl was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Marie; sister, Jackie Lee in infancy; and brothers-in-law, Harold Sens, Dean Rogness, and Roger Peterson.
