Memorial services for Chester Harold Dahl will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2012 at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Home. Rev. Kent Otterman will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by local servicemenâs organizations. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Chester died Monday, November 19, 2012 at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Albert Lea.
Chester Harold Dahl was born October 23, 1922 to Carl J. and Hilda M (Olson) Dahl. He was born in Ellendale, Minnesota and grew up on the family farm near Manchester. Chester attended country school near Manchester and was Lutheran confirmed at Central Freeborn Church. He served his country serving in the United States Army from 1941 â 1945 in Europe, the 2nd Armored Division, âHell on Wheelsâ. Chester was awarded many medals including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart with one bonze cluster, the French Normandy Commemorative and the Time Battle Stars. These were acquired from Normandy to Berlin. Chester also served in the Honor Guard for President Harry Truman for the Big 3 Conference in Berlin. On July 6, 1947 Chester was united in marriage to Jewell L. Steene at First Lutheran Church in Glenville. Chester worked as a farmer and forklift driver for Wilson and Co. for many years. Chester enjoyed remodeling houses, including his childrenâs homes and businesses. He also enjoyed playing cards, socializing with family and friends and hunting and fishing in his youth. Chester enjoyed telling stories and jokes; he could always find a quarter in his granddaughterâs ears! No one was a stranger to Chester, he always made time for people and was always there to help his friends and family.
Survivors include his wife Jewell; daughters Cynthia Dahl and Deborah Dahl Schwab; daughter-in-law, Gloria M. Dahl; 4 granddaughters Angelique Ruggles, Hillary Schwab, Grace Schwab and Brazil Dahl; 4 great granddaughters; sisters-in-law Donna Dahl, Marvel Dahl and Harriet Fisk; and many special nieces and nephews.
Chester was preceded in death by his 2 sons Bruce âHossâ Dahl and Danny H. Dahl; son-in-law Timothy Schwab; brothers Art, John and Omar Dahl; sisters Martha Nelson and Margaret Mouw; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Johnson, Lorriane Dahl and Ruth Sorbo; other family members Lorraine Dahl, Melroy Nelson, Harold Mauw, Charlotte & Duane Johnson, Garfield Fisk, Remore Steene, Ruth Sorbo, and Dennis Steene.
