Funeral services for Charlotte J. Rice, age 95, of Orfordville, WI and formerly of Hartland, MN will be held at Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Hartland at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2013 with Pastor Dennis Frank officiating. The visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in Hartland Cemetery.
Charlotte died on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Beloit Memorial Hospital, Beloit, Wisconsin.
Charlotte Josephine Johnson Rice was born March 28, 1918, in Bath Township, Freeborn County, Minnesota, the daughter of Oscar and Mabel (Swenning) Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed at North Freeborn Lutheran Church and attended District 5, rural Clarks Grove, Minnesota, her first eight grades. She graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1935 and then attended Normal Training at New Richland, Minnesota.
After teaching rural schools for six years, she married Alton Rice at the Hartland Lutheran Church on June 23, 1942. They had one daughter, Barbara Rice Olson.
Charlotte and Alton farmed in the Hartland area for 51 years. Charlotte was active in the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church Ladies Aid, JOY Circle, and taught Sunday school for several years. She was a bookkeeper for the Hartland Creamery Assn. for 22 years. In May of 1993 Alton and Charlotte moved to the North Side Oaks Condo in Albert Lea. The past two years she lived in Beloit, Wisconsin with Barbara and her family.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Kenneth) Olson of Beloit, Wisconsin, grandson Mark (Bridget) Olson, great-grandson Aric Olson and great-granddaughter Alexys Olson, all of Orfordville, Wisconsin; brother Donald (Louise) Johnson of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Mabel Johnson; husband, Alton; parents-in-law, Carl and Eda Rice; sister and brother-in-law Helen and Marshall Bendixen.
