Charlotte Annabelle Steene Johnson was born in Moscow, Minnesota on March 4, 1914, to Christian and Josephine Steene. She was baptized at age 2 by Rev. Forde at First Lutheran Church, Glenville. She was confirmed by Rev. A.C. Korsrud at the age of thirteen. She attended Glenville schools. She went to work at the "Tri State Telephone Company" in Glenville as switchboard operator. She also waited tables at the village restaurant. Charlotte and her sister Harriet sang for many funerals and activities in the Glenville area. She met Duane Johnson at a club dance in Gordonsville, MN. They were married on June 5, 1932 at Albert Lea, MN. They lived in Myrtle for eight years. Their daughter Carmen Elaine was born there. Charlotte enjoyed being in home-town plays and singing with the Myrtle quartet. In 1941, they moved to California. In December of that year, the war broke out. Charlotte went to work at North American Airlines, working on the wings of the P51. In 1945, they moved back to Minneapolis, but stayed only a year, then went back to L.A. They bought a home in Burbank and remained there until 1965. Charlotte worked as a checker for the Gelson grocery stores. In 1965, Duane was sent to St. Louis, MO to work for MacDonald Douglas. They spent nine years there, retiring back in Glenville in 1974. Survivors include her grandson Rick Cindi Mathewson of Santa Clarita, CA; great-grandson, Christopher; sisters, Harriet Fisk and Jewell Dahl of Albert Lea; brother-in-law, Chester Dahl; sister-in-law, Carole Steene of Sun City, AZ; nieces, Barbara Neil Lang of Albert Lea; Sandy Wayne Jensen of Sun City, AZ, Cynthia Dahl of Albert Lea, Linda Bighley of Glenville, Deborah Schwab of Spearfish, SD; nephews, Harold "Butch" Sandy Steene of Glenville, Larry Bonnie Steene of Austin, Gerry Helen Steene of Alden, Mike Steene of Glenville; many great and great-great nieces and nephews Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duane; daughter, Carmen Mathewson on October 25, 2009; son-in-law, Robert Mathewson; brothers, Remore and Dennis Steene; niece, Kathleen Jo Steene; nephews, Bruce and Danny Dahl; sisters-in-law, Ruth Sorbo and Doris Johnson; brothers-in-law, Garfield Fisk and Dick Johnson.
