Alvert Streyle was born in Hutchinson County, South Dakota on February 13, 1909. He was one of 13 children born to farming parents, Jacob and Christina Streyle. On November 10, 1933 he married Lois Huenemann in Menno, South Dakota. Together they raised two sons and six daughters. This was during and right after the Great Depression and WWII, so it was not a very easy life. Most of his working years were spent farming in South Dakota, California and Iowa before buying a farm near Alden, Minnesota. Alvert and Lois later moved to Albert Lea where Alvert held a variety of jobs. The dedicated father that he was, he worked extremely hard to support a wife and eight children. Alvert was a farmer-turned-caregiver when he took care of his wife for many years due to her failing health. When more care was needed, he very faithfully visited her daily in the nursing home and usually brought a treat for her. Lois passed away on September 2, 1996. All his life he was very active in church, serving on different boards and singing in small groups at funerals. In later years, if he had some leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking and went to weekly bowling with the senior citizens. Many words describe Alvert: Compassionate, honest, straight-forward, faithful, kind, gentle, hard worker, a man of few words, patient, loving, a disciplinarian and a good man. He accepted anything and everything that came his direction during his long life. Alvert represents many of those from previous generations who valued hard work, independence and an innate willingness to do what they felt was right. His example is worthy to note by those of us who follow. Survivors include his children, Robert Jean Streyle of Rochester, Marie Waldemar Sundet of Cedar Rapids, IA, Evelyn Philip Hunt of Minnetonka, Dorothy Orville Simonsen of Albert Lea, Verona Larry Butenhoff of Austin, Hildegard Jeffrey Radke of Anacortes, WA, Elizabeth Kent Urness of Minneapolis and Ronald Betsy Streyle of Rochester; grandchildren, John Chris Streyle, David Julie Streyle, Mary Ken Jones, Kathi Barnes, Heidi Sundet, Jon Hunt, Jay Simonsen, Beth Simonsen, Kris Perry Mayer, Todd Holly Butenhoff, Kelly Radke, Shannon Geoff Jones, Jill Lloyd Wurm, Ryan Ann Urness, Sarah Streyle, Erin John Jiminez, and Matthew Streyle; great-grandchildren, Johanna and Laura Streyle, Maria, Michael and Morgan Streyle, Nathan and Nicholas Griner, Samuel Jones, Hillari and Jared Barnes, Nadija Hunt, BriAnn and Cassidy Mayer, Tyler and Cody Butenhoff, Chloe and Anna Jones, Cassandra and Lindsey Wurm, and Stella and Truman Urness; sisters, Lydia Mettler and Viella Knodel and many other family members.
