Gene DenHerder

Funeral Services for Gene (Geno) DenHerder of Hollandale, MN will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the Hollandale Reformed Church in Hollandale, MN. Pastor Neal Ooms will Officiate. Visitation will be held Friday, September 10, from 5 to 7 pm at Bayview Freeborn Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Hollandale Cemetery. Gene died Friday evening September 3, 2021 at his home in Hollandale.

Gene was born August 31, 1947 in LeMars, Iowa and was the son of Alvin and Katherine (Feekes) DenHerder. He graduated from Sioux Center High School in Sioux Center Iowa in 1965. He attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, graduating in 1970. Gene entered the service in April of 1970, where he served in the Vietnam War. While in College, he met Susan Veldman. On August 8, 1970, they were united in marriage at the Hollandale Reformed Church. Gene finished his tour of service in 1971. He then joined Susan in Lake Benton, MN where he began teaching and coaching in Elkton, SD. There he built Elkton’s first winning football team and began a girl’s track team.

In June 1977, they moved to Hollandale, MN where Gene began farming with his father-in-law (Bill Veldman). While farming he also drove truck and sold insurance for Farm Bureau. Gene was an avid sports fan. He helped coach his sons’ Elks basketball teams, loved golfing, where he could hit the ball forever, and softball. His biggest passion was his family.

Gene is survived by his wife Susan, of 51 years; children, Suzanne (Scott) Dickson, Michael (Angie) DenHerder, Bruce (Sari) Denherder; grandchildren, Madison, Levi, Lukas, Aubri, Maci and Bryce; brothers, Vern (Diane) DenHerder, Dan (Rhonda) DenHerder; sister, Marilyn (Robert) VanDemark; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sandy (Jim) VanderSyde, Bob (Maureen) Veldman, Rick (Carolyn) Veldman and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Katherine DenHerder and father-in-law, William Veldman.

The family wants to thank St. Croix Hospice, Chastity, Denette and all the staff for their love and support for Gene these last weeks.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Hollandale Reformed Church, Hollandale Christian School, Hollandale Cemetery, or St. Croix Hospice.

Sue and family,
Sad to hear of the passing of Gene. We have good memories of Hollandale including playing softball with Gene and how he would light us a room when he walked in. May God comfort and keep you in the days ahead.

I am so sorry for your loss. Geno was a wonderful man and great friend'

Sue and family: We were sorry to learn of Gene's death. Gene and I met each other when we were freshmen at NWC. We played on the basketball team together. He was a bruising forward and I a small little guard. But we had "fun" in a variety of ways throughout our college career. My life is richer for having know Gene. We last saw Gene and Sue on a winter visit in Arizona. We pray God's comfort, care and love for you, Sue and family.Sincerely, Dave and Joyce Sikkema

We'll miss your waves as you very slowly drove by checking to make sure all was well in the countryside. Rest high Geno!

You are all nestled gently in my thoughts and prayers. I played a lot of basketball against Gene. Most of my bruises have healed. To live in the hearts of those we leave behind is to never die.

Thoughts and prayers to The DenHerder family. Gene (Geno to me) was always so full of life, boisterous laugh and always giving someone a hard time. Cherish the memories.
